![]() photo: david lindley the old cemetery was actually closed in 1787; miraculously it has survived centuries of privation and abuse (and of course the nazis) intact. it is famous for being the resting place of rabbi leow, legendary creator of the 'golem', which, it is said, he crafted from the mud from the river. he created the monster to help defend the local jewish population against anti-semites in the city. for a while his plan worked, with rabbi leow managing to work his way to a position of influence within the royal court, but eventually the monster started to run amok and rabbi lew had to break of from a sabbath sermon he was preaching to go and destoy his creation; the remains of which are reputedly still in the attic of the old-new synagogue. | |
