![]() photo: sue lindley once upon a time there was a railway line linking whitstable and canterbury; in fact this line - popularly known as the 'crab and winkle' line - was the oldest passenger line in the world. unfortunately some bright spark decided to close the railway in 1952, all that remains now is a trackway used for cyclists. the name though given to the line does point though to the fact that whitstable wasn't, and isn't, just about oysters; there is a fresh fish market in the harbour selling the local catch plus crab, cockles, winkles and - as shown here - whelks. the man in the photo was cleaning and sorting that days harvest of whelks, still alive at this point; despite the early hour he was near the end of his day and had already bagged up about 8 bags, piled nearby on a pallet. | |
