photo: sue lindley berber morocco is thought of as an 'arab' nation and most people claim to have arab ancestry; the truth is though that most people will have some berber history, with between 35-80% of the population being of berber origin. historically the arabs controlled the cities, with the berbers being mainly agricultural workers in the mountains and plains. a number of tribes spread into the sahara, tough hardy people who adapted to the harsh lifestyle: the traditional image of berbers to those in the west; the nomads of the desert. | |
