photo: sue lindley ait ben haddou is a traditional moroccan ksar - a fortified village - made largely from mud. you can see bricks at the bottom of the photo made, as for countless years, from mud and straw and left to dry in the sun. it was explained to us that the great thing about mud as a building material is that it's cool in the summer and warm in winter; the opposite in other words to modern building materials such as concrete. the downside was fairly obvious to me: the houses start to wash away in the rain (a process aided when the bricks crack from drying out in the sun or if frost gets into them). | |
