![]() photo: sue lindley we arrived after dusk in marrakech and decided to plunge headlong into the whirling maelstrom that is the main square: djemaa el fna. the square is huge; at one end is the mosque and at the other the bustling souks. in between are thousands of people milling around enjoying entertainments straight out of the middle ages - snake charmers, fortune tellers, musicians, acrobats, story tellers - or eating at the many stalls that line one end of the square. we decided to eat at the stalls that looked most frequented by the locals as we felt that that was where the most authentic food would be served. in the end we went to a stall that sold a type of lentil and bean soup - harira i think it was called - then another where we had a flat bread stuffed with a boiled potato, boiled egg and spinach (sounds awful but it was lovely), and finally another where we had a cinammon tea and cake. after a freshly squeezed orange juice to round off our meal we worked out that the entire evening had cost us the grand sum of £3.60 ($5 US) in total! | |
