locks

we were ably guided around the narrow maze of alleyways in marrakech by moulay; an obviously devout man who took pains to explain something of islam to our little group.

he explained that this window was set in the wall of the mausoleum of one of marrakech’s holiest men - who died over 700 years previously - the equivalent I suppose to a christian saint. apparently the local have a tradition that, if faced with a particularly intractable problem, they come to this window and affix a padlock to the grille; if after a suitable period (fifteen days I think) the lock is open then it is a sign that their problem will be solved – presumably thanks to the guiding hand of the holy man’s spirit.

moulay was extremely scornful of such superstitious ignorance: to him it was a sin for a muslim to act so, no-one should come between a man and his god; evidently though others in the area felt differently.
