essaouira

photo: david lindley

the final leg of our journey through morocco took us to the lovely fishing port of essaouira. off the beaten path for a long while essaouira has a colourful history; from a roman centre of dye production, to a portugeuse fortified town in the 16th century to a hippy hangout in the 60's where it attracted the likes of hendrix et al, now it's morocco's most popular coastal resort. it made a pleasant change to be away from the claustaphobic nature of marrakech and its' teeming alleys; essaouira had a lot more space, and being built in a type of grid system was far, far easier to navigate around. this photo was taken just before sunrise from the fishing port side of place moulay hassan looking back towards the medina.
