mogador

the fortifications in essaouira were built by the portuguese in the 15th century, which quickly became an important stopping point in their trade routes. at the time the port was called mogador, a name that obviously just had to be changed at some stage into it’s current unpronounceable form. in the late 16th century sir francis drake visited the port, but by then the portuguese had gone and he sailed off, presumably in search of more lucrative, spanish, ports to plunder!
