![]() photo: david lindley on 28 february 1933 the reichstag building, home to the german parliament, was burned down. rather conveniently for adolf hitler - who had been elected chancellor in january - the arson attack was blamed on the communists; a witchhunt ensued and many of the new regime's opponents were arrested. in march the nazis had full control of the government and the rest, as they say, is history. fast forward to 1990 and the re-unification of germany, the decision was taken to move the parliament from bonn back to berlin and into the reichstag. the famous dome of the building had long since disappeared though and so the building was rebuilt (retaining the exterior) in 1999 - to a norman foster design - to create the glass and steel structure you see here on the roof. | |
