oh dear, i can feel a rant coming on! why oh why did they do this? now i know that the church was pretty well destroyed during the war and they felt that they had to put something up in its place - but this? honestly all this does for me is to confirm that the 50's and 60's were certainly the decades that taste forgot! when you compare the work done to rebuild the famous frauenkirche in dresden and then look at this horror, there's just no comparison.

anyway, for those who'd rather a few facts than a piece of my mind, the original church was consecrated in 1895 and was demolished in a bombing raid in 1943, after which only the tower remained fairly intact. the tower was damaged however, and instead of repairing in the authorities decided to cap it off as it was: the jagged profile giving rise to it's nickname of 'hollow tooth'. the monstrosity they built next to it was built between 1957 and 1963 by a so called architect called egon eiermann.
