neue synagoge

originally built in 1866, the neue synagoge was once one of the largest synagogues in europe with a hall that held up to 3000 people. it was damaged in the infamous 'kristallnacht' in 1938, when so many jewish properties were attacked and destroyed by the nazis - oddly though the man in charge of the police and fire crews for the area made sure his men saved this structure, despite the official policy to not help the jews; i'm sure his career didn't progress much further afterwards - and further damaged by the bombing during the war. however the nazis never bothered to finish the job for some reason and so there was at least something left to be rebuilt later. in 1995 the synagogue re-opened as a museum and smaller place of worship and of course a symbol of hope for the few remaining jewish people of germany.
