fisherman and net

photo: sue lindley

this one is for bob! we weren't going to post this shot today, but it does seem to fit the sequence better than what we had planned; like yesterday's post this chap is checking his nets for damage prior to stowing them away for the day.

you might notice the crucifix around his neck: for many centuries kerala has been influenced by both invaders and sea-bourne traders and is today a melting-pot of various religions (and incedentally an area which proves that people of differing faiths can actually live cheek by jowl in harmony). India is of course predominantly a hindu country, but here in kerala there are large population of christians and muslims (20% and 25% respectively). in fact, the oral history of the area tells that in fact kerala has the oldest continuous christian community in the world: the apostle thomas ('doubting thomas') having landed in kerala in ad54, where he started work trying to convert the jewish traders who had settled there. travelling around kerala i was surprised by just how many christian churches there were, and how many faiths, from syrian orthodox right through to us style envangelists, and unlike in the west (or england at least) the churches were full.
