coy girl

i'm not sure why, but it is the habit of the people (at least, the hindus) in kerala to keep their daughters hair very short, and liberally smothered in coconut oil: many girls also sport dark painted eybrows, the paint made from a paste of oil and the ashes from burnt coconut husks. once the girls reach a certain age, the hair is grown out and, it seems, never cut again!

We noted a variety of dots and spots in red, yellow and white on the the foreheads of the people we saw as we travelled around kerala, and we were told that they are used to signify the deity of choice for the person concerned; whether they're praying for a healthy crop, wealth or academic acheivement for example.
