catfish

photo: david lindley

late afternoon: the air is cooler, everything stained gold by the setting sun; time to relax, catch up with friends, have a camera shoved in your face by an odd foreigner, and perhaps time still to sell a few catfish.

for anyone following the duck story of a couple of days ago, questions were asked about why the ducks didn't fly off: clipped wings seems to be the best guess - and i suppose that the farmers aren't going to want their rent-a-duck flying off when they should be about their job of gobbling frogs. thanks to AG who wrote:

'clipping does not hurt, i’m told, and involves the shortening of the first four or so primary feathers so as to reduce ‘lift’. most of the wing is left intact so that the birds can ‘glide’ down from a modest height if they come to a drop. apparently, without that ability, they develop a fear of falling'

as he rightly says, it's amazing what you can learn from a photoblog!
