periyar national park 2

photo: sue lindley

set high in the western ghats, in kerala, is the periyar national park and tiger reserve. the large lake at it's heart was formed by the building of a dam in 1895 (it's still dotted with the stumps of old trees sticking out of the water even after all of this time) is now a major attractor to the wildlife that supposedly throngs the park. although it's called a tiger reserve there are very few left and in reality most tourists come here to try to catch a glimpse of the population of wild indian elephants that live there.

apart from elephants, many other animals are supposed to live in the park - we saw deer, wild pigs, monitor lizards, monkeys and leeches (the last is a whole other story!) - and consequently the park is quite a tourist attraction for the local population. we were lucky in that we did get to see an elephant not far from where this photo was taken: as soon as it saw us though it went and hid in the trees seen to the right of the lake and so we spent the next hour watching the odd tree suddenly shake, just hoping that it would come out into the open again. it didn't.
