![]() photo: david lindley it was suggested that we not wander off into the tea plantation as the plantation bosses were a little wary of westerners with cameras having too much contact with the tea pickers: there having been a fair amount of adverse publicity over the past few years about the wages and conditions that the workers have to live with. consequently we stuck to the road, and gradually a few people started to approach us; sort of a them-watching-us-watching-them scenario. then this guy turned up. he didn't seem to be interested in us particularly and i got the distinct feeling he wasn't the average worker either. i wondered perhaps whether he was keeping an eye on the us to ensure that we were just tourists and not some globe-trotting investigative journalists looking for a scoop on exploited tea pickers! i broke off and approached him for a photo and, although he agreed, i certainly didn't feel any of the warmth and friendliness i'd had from his fellow countrymen. | |
