![]() photo: david lindley today's is the last of the litle mini series of work shots; the collection of the bundles of tea. thanks for the comments on yesterday's photo - it's easy to forget that such work conditions were probably fairly widespread in the west until quite recently too. sobering too to think that the recent influx of migrant workers means that slave labour techiniques may still be operating in certain areas in europe and the us, with employers generally turning a blind eye if the labour they hire is cheap. i don't know what conditions the tea pickers here operate under; tata tea deny that they operate in any way other than with concern for their employees (though i've heard that they are notorious for not letting outsiders into their plantations to check), and i can only say that these pickers - along with the others we met - all seemed extremely cheerful and certainly didn't look oppressed! | |
