just a kid

apparently the nilgiri tahr are addicted to salt! an american biologist, studying the goats in the 1980s, was frustrated that he couldn't get close enough to them. his local helpers advised that in the past they had attracted the goat using salt; sceptical, he decided it was worth a try and to his amazement he soon had a herd of goats milling around his camp!

eravikulam national park is also home to a rare and unusual plant called neelakurunji, which grows quite widely on the mountainsides and who's claim to fame is that it only flowers once every twelve years. unfortunately the flower wasn't in bloom when we visited (although we were pointed out a flower supposedly the one) as apparently it's next scheduled flowering is not due until october and november of this year.
