more tea, vicar?

this photo was taken later in the day of the storms mentioned recently. sorry to have to say that we took no photos of the storm, just felt content that we were snug in the dry interior of the restaurant whilst the world turned watery outside our window! also, i think we were too distracted by the food to worry too much about what was going on outside: we had gone to a vegetarian restaurant that had been recommended to us for the thali - india's version of fast food.

a thali will differ from region to region, but is typically a selection of small dishes served on a round tray - or as in our case a banana leaf (less to wash up i suppose). so, a leaf appears and then four or five dollops of various vegetable curries around the top of the leaf and a pile of rice in the centre. the fun thing is though that you've no choice but to eat like the locals, and in this case this means with the hands: or rather hand; it being extremely rude to use the left hand to touch food. so you struggle along trying to eat with one hand (easiest thing is to sit on the left one to stop you inadvertantly using it), attempting to make something edible out of a thin soupy dhal and rice! i tell you, it's an aquired skill, learnt over years: we provided endless fun to the other customers in the restaurant watching us as we stumbled and flung bits of food over ourselves; hilarity when we mixed something into the rice that turned out to be the desert.

eventually, the rain was over and we emerged, replete, into the sunlight. the cost? pennies.
