it came as something of a shock to descend from the peace and tranquility of the hills and tea plantations into the busy whirl of an indian city. kochi is one of india's principal ports and has been an important trading centre for over a thousand years. originally famed for its role as a spice trading centre, it became the first european settlement in india and was the capital of portuguese india until that role was moved to goa. since then it has been ruled by the dutch and finally the british, until india gained its independence in 1947. today it is a smallish city of 1.6 million spread around the bay that provides most of it's economic importance to this day.

typically the road system copes poorly with the needs of a modern city; it took some time and many, many stops in the frenetic traffic to get to the city centre - but at least it gave us the opportunity to cast our eyes about us and drink in the activity and the energy we saw around. this shot was taken from our bus on one such stop. i was tickled by the idea that the ladies tailoring school was, for some reason, sponsored by elf but i suppose it's too much to hope for really.
