hindustan ambassador

photo: david lindley

this man was obviously proud to pose with his car; the famous hindustan motors ltd very own ambassador. based on the morris oxford motor car first produced in the uk in the 1940s, it became the first car ever to be made in india in 1948 and has been continually produced, largely unchanged, ever since then. for 5 decades this tough little car has bumped its way across india and is now as famous in it's own unchanging way as the black cabs of london. for the enthusiasts among you, i believe there is a new version that includes such mod cons as power-steering and a digital clock; interestingly, considering the heat in much of india, air conditioning does not seem to be an option. for the geeks among you, the colour illustrated is symphony gold.

oh, and a belated happy birthday to india: yesterday was their independence day. thanks to jyoti for pointing that out.

ps. anyone notice the mercedes hubcaps? obviously a man with aspirations!
