![]() photo: david lindley st francis church was probably built in the 15th or 16th centurys, the land the gift of the local raja. vasco de gama was initially buried there in 1524 before having the pleasure of having his body moved back to portugal by public demand! the dutch came and turned the church protestant, the english came and it turned anglican. one remnant of english colonial days is the continued use of the large canvas fans that are suspended over the worshippers, known as punkahs: as any fan of the awful old british sitcom it aint half hot mum will know these are operated by punkah-wallahs. i felt there was still a feel of the colonial past hereabouts: the church is situated on church road, the church and funereal memorials celebrate sturdy servants of the empire and adjacent to the church is a large village green, site of many cricketers honing their skills. | |
