chinese nets 4

photo: sue lindley

i was trying to establish whether there was any kind of proof to link the chinese nets with the court of kublai khan, which the legend suggests is where the technology for the nets originated. i had no luck unfortunately but wikipedia suggested another possible source as the chinese explorer zheng he who travelled widely around india and south-east asia. it's really fascinating to learn that the chinese were sailing and exploring in massive boats far, far earlier than the famous explorers of western history; including of course getting to america way before columbus! and it shows how the history we are taught is so skewed to the perspective of the west that we find it almost incomprehensible that people could have invented things, discovered places, explored, all before our supposed 'firsts'.
