![]() photo: sue lindley a couple of years ago, in lieu of a christmas present for sue, i bought her a goat via oxfam! the idea is that you pay a provider a sum (£20.00 or thereabouts) and they provide a goat for a needy family somewhere in the third world: your beloved gets a card saying 'i bought you a goat' and the recipient of the goat gets something that can gives them milk (with hopefully a surplus they can sell), starts a herd and - eventually - provides meat. it brings a living, no matter how meagre, to people who have none. we were put in mind of this when we took a walk to a local village nearby to our hotel and saw these two kids practising their butting skills: they looked well kept, better off in many ways than the ragged children who were keeping an eye on them, and we wondered if they were the product of a scheme such as the oxfam one. | |
