![]() photo: david lindley and this is the reward for all that effort, a hardly straining net of small-fry and one (unwanted) puffer fish. the net was hauled ashore and a circle of men surrounded it, expectantly awaiting the moment the catch was revealed; behind them a further circle of crows hopped around on the sand cawing noisily in the hope they would receive some of the rejects. i can't say if this is what they expected, if this was the catch that they fish for, but it seemed to me to be a hell of a lot of effort for not much reward: remember, this catch would then be divided up by the ten to twenty people who had helped to land it. i also wondered whether this was a sign of over-fishing in the shallow waters of the bay, i can't see how repeated forays into the sea on a daily basis could be in any way sustainable. | |
