![]() photo: david lindley welcome to northumberland, and it's historical (if not current administrative) capital: newcastle-upon-tyne. actually i'm already getting bogged down here as this structure is the gateshead millenium bridge - what we soft southerners generally think of newcastle is actually that city on the north bank of the tyne and gateshead on the south bank. confused? you will be! the gateshead millenium bridge, as you might guess, was built to celebrate the millenium; it was floated up the tyne in one piece in november 2000, before being lowered into position by an immense floating crane onto a bed of 19000 tonnes of concrete. the structure is designed to allow river traffic to pass underneath by means of the whole thing pivoting upwards - like a closed eye opening - to form an archway. all in all it is a wonderful sight and a truly excellent addition to the famous landscape of the tyne. more on newcastle later but in other news, i'm doing something completely different this week: check out our home town in real time glory over at scenefrommylife. it's very scary to have to work to a deadline and try to take something different and (hopefully) interesting on a day-by-day basis; something i've never done so far. the first photo should go up around 09:00est, which i thing is something like 13:00 uk time. | |
