![]() photo: david lindley the millennium bridge leads from newcastle's quayside over to two major arts centres on the gateshead side of the river tyne. shown here is the BALTIC centre for commercial art. it is housed in the old rank hovis flour mill; an silo built in 1950 with a capacity of 22,000 tonnes: despite the relative modernity of the building, it had become such an iconic building on the landscape of the tyne that, when the factory closed in 1981, the local authorities spent many years humming and haahing over its fate before the decision was finally taken to turn it the major arts centre it is today. oh, and for those of an inquisitive nature, it is believed that the name 'baltic' comes from the habit of rank hovis of naming their facilities after seas or oceans. and if you're interested, don't forget to check out our home town of chesham over at scenefrommylife, where i'm guest photographer this week. | |
