![]() photo: david lindley october 14 is a date that will always give pause to the fishermen of burnmouth, for it was on that date in 1881 that 60 of their number lost their lives in a sudden storm that devastated the fleet. 189 fishermen died in total, the bulk of whom came from another village a couple of miles up the coast, called eyemouth. it seemed hard to reconcile the fact of this disaster when we gazed out of our cottage (quite possibly home to one of those fishermen's famillies) over the millpond flat sea; then you looked out at the vicious ribs of rock jutting out at low tide to think of the devatation that could be wrought. there is a fascinating account of that fateful day here, along with a little brighter postscript to the tale... | |
