![]() photo: david lindley the cheviot hills stretch across northern england and straddle the border with scotland; once they were a chain of volcanoes but many millennia of erosion has polished them down to the rolling, heather and fern clad mounds we see today. it has to be one of the most remote and tranquil regions in england; you can walk for hours and not see another living soul (except for the odd sheep); hear nothing but the song of the curlew and the rush of the wind; smell nothing but crisp and fresh air. the remains of pre-historic farmsteads can still be seen on these hills, and you can walk along ancient drover roads that have been continually walked for many centuries. | |
