the pinnacles

photo: david lindley

staple island was our first part of call and is notable for the vast quantity of puffins that live and breed there: apparently 35,000 nesting pairs were recorded in 1999! seen here are 'the pinnacles', a number of isolated rock stacks just off staple island, and a suitably remote and inaccessible home for the countless shags and guillemots that crowd their every surface.

tomorrow, the birds!
