![]() photo: sue lindley the large and colourful bill of the puffin is apparently a cosmetic device designed simply for the attraction of the opposite sex: it seems that, once the mating season is over (and hence the need to impress for another year), they shed the colourful outer beak to reveal a smaller, duller bill. the title of the shot is a translation of the puffin's latin name - fratercula arctica - which is supposed to be a reference to the black and white plumage resembling a monk's robes. | |
