staple island

photo: david lindley

the next couple of shots are of staple island itself. i don't own a lens longer than 80mm; in fact i can count the times on one hand over the years that i've ever wished i had one, this trip to the farne islands of course being one of them. so, while sue happily pursued the birds with her 70-300mm zoom, i had to find something else that i could take: with utter futility for a good while i tried to capture some of the puffins as they shot over my head with bills laden with fish; but as their little wings beat at 100 fpm (flaps per minute) i never got anything that wasn't just a vague blur!

this scene is near to - and might actually be- the pinnacles shown the other day, taken from the island side. the vast majority of the birds huddled together on top of the rocks are guillimots, which are a relation of the puffin, but you can also see a couple of shags in the foreground and some gulls nesting percariously on the sheer sides of the stacks.

don't worry though, more of sue's bird shots to come!!
