staple island 2

photo: david lindley

despite having the island to themselves, the avian inhabitants of staple island seem to like to huddle along the edges of it for some reason. and not just any old edges either; it seems to mainly be to the west of the island, facing the mainland two miles away and despite the presence of perfectly decent looking cliffs elsewhere. perhaps the sea is shallower; perhaps there are sandbanks with decent food to be found; perhaps there is greater shelter there; or perhaps i should shut up, stop speculating and let someone else have a guess?
