![]() photo: david lindley earlier this evening we watched a brilliant film: voces inocentes (innocent voices), a true story based upon the childhood of the writer, oscar torres, who grew up in a small village during the civil war in el salvador in the 1980's. the military junta at the time recruited 12 year olds into the army (forcibly) and the story revolves around his daily struggles in life and to avoid being conscripted. i dont think i've seen a better film for a long time, nor a better actor: no mean feat for an eleven year old! it might seem a bit bleak a proposition, but i would urge anyone to watch it who fancies a trip out of their comfort zone; to see the world as it is for too many children, and not as hollywood would want us to buy into. today, according to save the children, there are up to 300,000 child soldiers - many as young as seven years old - in up to 40 countries around the world. | |
