dunstanburgh castle

i know this is similar to yesterday's shot, but this is our favourite place in the country so you'll have to cut us some slack!

the building of dunstanburgh castle was began in 1313 by thomas, earl of lancaster, the most important of the english barons. at this time he was in an openly hostile relationship with the king (edward II) though the latest research seems to point to the grandness of his building at dunstanburgh was perhaps more of a symbol of opposition than as a military stronghold. more a case of mine is bigger than yours possibly! in any case the fortress was not of much use to thomas as after the rebellion he eventually started was defeated he never made it back to his new base: he was captured and executed. dunstanburgh passed on to john of gaunt who made many alterations but interestingly none of these remain, the structure you see today being largely thomas's creation. it's long decline began after the war of the roses where it was the focus of fierce fighting; twice being besieged by yorkist troops.

finally, yesterday someone asked what is a stotty pizza? obviously, it's a pizza....on a stotty! stotties are wonderful with anything; my all time favourite being filled with ham and pease pudding. sadly stotties don't seem to be found much further south than durham.
