![]() photo: david lindley dusntanburgh castle taken from the small fishing village of craster, widely famed for it's kippers. once upon a time my father ran a pub in central london largely staffed with aussies and kiwis on 'walkabout'. one day one of the barmaids asked him what was a traditional english breakfast? quick as a flash he told her 'kippers and custard', and moved on: a few days later the unmistakeable aroma of kippers floated from the kitchens; curiosity peaked, he investigated the smell to find the barmaid not only eating, but enjoying thouroughly, his creation. today i have visions of people in australia eating this dish as an english tradition, taken back to them when the barmaid returned from her travels. | |
