eyemouth

photos: david lindley

the summery path shown in yesterday's post eventually led to the fishing port of eyemouth: a much larger town than burnmouth, it has been known as a fishing port since the 13th century. during henry VIII's wars with the scots eyemouth was fortified by the english, who used the port as a maritime base; and at times it was a notorious smuggler's haunt too - though i have to admit that this romantic and 'hard' reputation was dented for me by the fact that one of the main products being smuggled was tea, and not the barrels of rum i envisaged!
