![]() photos: david lindley st. abbs is a little fishing village a few miles up the coast from eyemouth. it is in fact a fairly new village, only being built during the 1830's by an edinburgh based brewery who developed it as a fishing station. it's name is much older however, coming from a northumbrian princess called ebba, who was shipwrecked here in 630 ad: she joined a nunnery a mile from here in a priory at coldingham where eventually she became the abbess and was later canonised. interestingly, the priory was burnt down in 679 after being struck by lightning - contemporary reports suggesting this was some kind of divine retribution for 'inappropriate behaviour' amongst the nuns and monks! other stories tell of the nuns bathing in the sea where st.abbs harbour now stands using a wheeled contraption that allowed them to enter and leave the water unobserved; presumably preserving a modesty that they didn't have back in the priory!! ghost trees | |
