![]() photos: david lindley today's is our 500th post on roadtonowhere! we'd love to be able to say that we've learnt some things over the past year and a bit, but i fear that we're pretty well just as ignorant as when we started this venture! one thing that we have learnt though is that there are some very nice people out there, who for some baffling reason see fit to drop in on our humble site and share a few words with us: to them we send our heart-felt thanks! today's shot is of lindisfarne castle, built in around 1550 at just about the time that the priory went out of use due to henry viii's dissoloution of the monasteries; in fact stones from the priory were used as building material for the new castle. after the union of england and scotland its' defensive purpose largely ebbed away and it was slowly run down until 1901 when it became the property of one edward hudson, a publishing tycoon, who had it refurbished in arts and crafts style by sir edwin lutyens. since 1944 it - and the garden designed by gertrude jekyll - has been in the care of the national trust. | |
