the community baboon sanctuary is unique in that it is a completely voluntary scheme established by, and operated by, the local farmers in the area. In 1985 a group of local creole farmers agreed that they would protect the environment of the black howler monkey, especially where their habitat meets the farmers land. to that end they agreed to establish forest “corridors” between fields and plots to enable the monkeys to travel between woods and not be isolated: they even go so far as stringing ladder “bridges” between groups of trees for the monkey travellers. to date, over 160 farmers surrounding the sanctuary have signed up to this agreement, pledging to maintain the forests and these buffer zones.
