![]() photos: david lindley one thing very appealing to increasing amounts of north american tourists is the fact that the official language of belize is english: it is though a bit of a shame that the vast majority of them only see the country from the air-conditioned comfort of a coach as they are whisked from cruise-liner to mayan temple stopping only to shop in an outlet that is (in all probability) owned by the self-same liner companies; they do miss out on a wonderful quirky place. i found it incredibly strange to see (and hear) ethnic mayans and hispanic descendants all talking with a broad caribbean accent, along with the african-european descendants of the area for whom creole is the language spoken - unless in conversation with tourists. this shot features a bus stop near to the baboon sanctuary; it tickled me to see the warning not to drop litter, 'betta no litta'. more intriguing were the other words: 'max is love'. well he might be, but who was this max that had such a great reputation/high opinion of himself? we saw a few more of these slogans on bus stops, such as 'felix works for you' before finally twigging that they were a form of political advertising. i felt a lot warmer about max then, not for him the mundane world of taxation, hospitals and schools; with him you see he has just one concern - love! | |
