stela

this shot really shows the way that the rainforest crowded in on the old mayan sites once the people themselves had left; most of the structures unearthed were tree covered in a matter of years after they became redundant. it's hard to imagine now but aerial photos have allowed archaeoligists to estimate that there were up to 4000 mayan sites belize alone; in fact it's said that if there's a little hill in that flat country then there's probably a temple under there waiting to be unearthed.

the stela - a decorated stone that once would have adorned the front of the temple - shown at the base of the temple in this shot is actually a reproduction of one uncovered during the archaeological dig; apparently worshippers built a fire at it's base, doused it with cold water and the hot stone, cooling too quickly, cracked and toppled.
