 photo: david lindley we were at the mayan site of altun ha early enough to avoid the coachloads of cruise-liner tourists who make up the bulk of the visitors there, so we didn't catch on to the idea behind this scam for a while. simplicity itself, the idea is to get a couple of cute kids with a sample of the local wildlife, find a tourist with a camera, pose sweetly and then demand money (occasionally aided by the sudden appearance of an older brother). obviously once we'd cottoned on to this tactic we avoided the kids as much as possible but it was incredibly sad to see a couple later with a baby crocodile - mouth sellotaped together - posing for a group of tourists. david's listening to: stagger lee ~ nick cave | |
