![]() photo: sue lindley the mayan site of xunantunich, located next to the mopan river, is reached by a hand-winched barge: you walk through forest unable to see anything but trees when suddenly the mist-shrouded ruins rise in front of you. it is a very eerie place like that, as if the ghosts of the past are wreathing the old structures standing in front of you. the name xunantunich, although mayan in origin, is a modern name meaning 'stone woman' - no-one remembers the original name of the city anymore. here the name refers to the ghost of a woman claimed by people to inhabit the site; dressed in white, she has fire-red glowing eyes. the day we visited, she could easily be imagined. 10:45 ~ update: sue didn't like the crop of her shot that i posted originally; if you want to see it, it's here. listening to: empty sky ~ bruce springsteen | |
