barton creek

photo: david lindley

to get to barton creek you have to travel through some of the most picturesque farmland around; farmed by mennonites it really does appear that you've stepped back in time to a simpler age; unfortunately though, i suspect metalled roads are possibly against their belief system so the admiration of the scenery was somewhat tempered by our heads banging on the roof of our van!

it's worth a dented bonce though once you get to barton creak itself because it's a beautiful place; brilliant blue water issues from an underwater cave system that the maya once used for ritual ceremonies. after a swim and a beer, we were issued a powerful lamp and a car-battery and led down to the boats in which we'd enter the cave system.
