 photo: sue lindley tikal lies over the belizean border in guatemala and is one of the major mayan sites; founded in around 700bc, it lay hidden until rediscovered in 1881 - a fact i found surprising as several of the steep-sided pyramids pierce the tree canopy and can clearly be seen from miles around. | |
