colle di val d'elsa III/VI

photo: david lindley

in reality two towns in one, colle di valle d'elsa comprises colle bassa- the lower town - a fairly non-descript place of paper mills, nail factories and a puzzling one way system and colle alta- the upper town - perched on the hillside above. this latter is a real beauty (and one curiously under-visited by the tourist hoards streaming between florence and siena); one main street stretching along the hill ridge, lined on both sides by fading medieval palazzi.

this photo was taken from a bar in a square opposite the quaint church of santa maria in canonica (unfortunate name for nikon fans!) where a glass or two of nicely chilled prosecco was taken whilst watching the faithful exiting their sunday service.
