![]() photo: david lindley we were staying in an old (and long since forgotten) monastery in the heart of the tuscan countryside. it was a slightly odd place really; there was a series of holiday apartments that had been created from what (i guess) were the old storerooms under the main building, whilst the rooms above seemed either deserted or occupied by families of what seemed to be migrant farm workers. i'm not sure where they were from but my best guess would be the ukraine, bulgaria or russia. it made for a slightly surreal air to the place: polished westerners (that's us) with hire car and the others, who still seemed to be living a lifestyle that has disappeared in most areas years ago, all cheek by jowl. just around the corner from the monastery, on a bumpy and rutted road, we came across this crumbling barn marooned in a sea of wheat; it made for a wonderful photo opportunity. | |
