banking has provided much of sienese wealth; their traders working as far afield as england and germany as long ago as the 13th century. piazza salimbeni is formed by three interlocking palazzi that have been the headquarters of a bank (monte de paschi di siena) devoted to lending and charitable causes, to combat abuses of usury, for over five hundred years.
