a lofty perch, siena

photo: david lindley

the heart of old siena as revealed by a heart-pumping climb to the top of the torre del mangia seen in yesterday's photo. the white and black marble-clad building is the duomo, the cathedral, and if you look carefully you can see the outer walls of an abandoned attempt to add a whole new nave at 90 degrees from the main building. basic errors in the build meant it was never completed, but despite that the walls have stood there for nearly 700 years!
